A BB gun is generally more painful than an airsoft gun because it shoots metal BBs at higher velocities, which can penetrate the skin. Airsoft guns, on the other hand, use plastic pellets that typically cause less pain and are less likely to cause injury. For comparison; an airsoft replica averages about 1 joule of energy for impact force, a BB gun is going to have about 4 joules for a cheap replica pistol and can get as high as 80 with rifles, compared to a paintball marker which is 7-15 joules of energy. With those numbers in mind airsoft can be considered much safer compared to other hobbies that launch projectiles.
