A gas blowback airsoft gun uses compressed gas (such as green gas or CO2) stored in the magazine to propel BBs and cycle the slide or bolt. When the trigger is pulled, the gas is released, firing the BB and simultaneously moving the slide back, which resets the firing mechanism for the next shot. This action mimics the recoil and operation of a real firearm.
